Coming back to James' post about his progression, it's been the same for me really. I came into FM3 rather a noob, using automatic and all assists save for brake assist (I can brake for myself thanks). First, I noticed STM was useless, and so that went away very quickly. Then so to did TCS, save for in some of the faster LMP cars and the SSC Aero. Manual was the biggest trial for me, but after two weeks of practicing with faster and faster machines, I got it down. Now my laps are up to two or three seconds faster, I feel much more involved in my driving, and I'm loving FM3 more than ever.

So you see, we don't need a class for the amateurs, we need to work with them to help them become pros!

When I first started playing Forza 2, I used every assist nearly. But like many other's, I got rid of the STM nearly instantly. The next assist to go was TCS once I realised I had more car control through a corner with it (at least in FWD and AWD cars). ABS was easy to get rid of, once I picked up a newer racing style I could easily get into a groove. :)

When I was getting ready to take part in a touring car championship on Forza 2, I couldn't keep up with some people on the exit of corners and in the higher gears down the straights. I spent a week learning manual gears, and it was hard. :|

So coming onto Forza 3, I had no ABS, no TCS, no STM and I used Manual Gears (I didn't bother with the auto-brake feature). The hardest thing for me to learn was using the clutch, and if I'm honest even after a year, I still grind my gears because I don't press A&B or X&A at the exact same time. :(

Racing in public lobbies and using cars from all sorts of drivers really helped me go faster and faster. One driver who has probably helped me go as quick as I have was EMW APEX (although that was a year ago). Through him, I got to race the likes of xL EnZo, GP Misko, GP rakete mikey. Those drivers who I consider to be some of the fastest people on Forza. :)

It's the thousand blades of Aegon's enemies, a story we agreed to tell each other over and over until we forget that it's a lie." "But what do we have left once we abandon the lie? Chaos? A gaping pit waiting to swallow us all?" "Chaos isn't a pit, it's a ladder. Many who have tried to climb it fail, never get to try again. The fall breaks them. Some are given a chance to climb, but they refuse, they cling to the realm. For the gods, for love. Illusions, only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is."

I started driving with no aids at all back to Forza 1 and earlier with other games...

I only use TC with cars that are abusive in their wheel spinning behavior and I use Auto-Clutch since I just can't drive with the clutch without a proper steering wheel...

In rFactor and GT Legends on the PC I manually lift on upshifts and I blip on downshifts... (Heel and Toe)

When I'll have my G27 I'll use the clutch... So my Heel and Toe will be full :P

Don't want to be rude with those using braking lines, and I know some pretty fast drivers use them......, but this is one of the most stupid assist ever !!! The purpose of a race driver is to learn tracks and always get faster, where will you see braking lines telling you it's time to brake on real tracks ???

You make a fair point, but whenever I'm racing in real life I have a sense where to brake before I've ever turned the corner, I just don't get that same feeling on a video game so I just leave it on.

In real life you need to do a couple of laps before it is possible to know your braking points, and the game is just the same, you need to practice to learn the tracks, if you feel you can take the corners fast straight away, you are obviously not going as fast as possible.

It's hard for me to inherit anything when I'm more used to a steering wheel and pedals as to when playing a game with a controller. Plus the cockpit views aren't as they seem

If you use the line and you are faster, then use the line, if you don't use the line and you are complaining, why? every one has the same opportunity, if they are getting such an advantage why not try it.
I'm sure that if an F1 driver had a system that highlighted the point he needed to brake ect. they'd jump at the chance to use it.

Everyone was asked to stop, so i did. While i agree that the braking line is kind of silly, it is in the game, and if it does help some(me included), why not use it? But, i do think that at some point i should learn to drive without it, i've run the tracks enough times that i should know by now when and where to brake. I still use ABS too, any tips on how to break that bad habit?

Go to a track you like, take it off, and just begin driving until you are used to it :P

Not sure what it is or if it's dangerous but I've only done it once and I thought Sesame Street was downstairs.

It took me 2 laps to master no ABS in the Peugeot at Sebring with a controller. My main technique is to get your braking finger and try and make it restrict your braking as in your pinching your finger with the trigger
