Facing problems importing VOB/AVI/MP4 files to Windows Movie Maker for further video editing? Here you'll get the easy and quick solution to add VOB/AVI/MP4 files into Movie Maker.
Q1:"I got a bunch of video recordings in .MP4 format that from my GoPro Hero3 and Sony PMW-EX3. Whereas, when I wanna edit those MP4 footage in Windows Movie Maker before sharing with my friends, I met problems: the Movie Maker handled with the MP4 files so slowly and some files even couldn’t be recognized. I couldn’t edit my videos smoothly."
Windows Media Player 11 recognizes and plays MPEG-4 just fine but WMM doesn’t. This problem occurs because MP4 is incompatible with Windows Movie Maker.
Q2:"According to what I read, this version of Windows Movie Maker SHOULD import .vob files unlike previous earlier versions. The problem is that when I import, there is no sound and a 870MB file only shows 3 or 4 seconds of video. Obviously something's up."
VOB is basically a MPEG-2 video file which is stored in Video_TS folder in a DVD. As this kind of video file usually contains one or several audio tracks and subtitle tracks that are multiplexed together into one stream form, it is not so easy to playback or edit.
Q3:" I’m new to making videos, I’m trying to make one, but Windows Movie Maker won’t let me import an AVI video! This is exactly what it says: ‘blahblahblah.avi can't be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on the computer. If you've already downloaded and installed the codec, please close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then import the file again’. "
In fact, Windows Movie Maker can support several AVI formats, like Motion JPEG AVI and DV-AVI. In other words, some AVI videos encoded by other codecs are not so compatible with Windows Movie Maker.
Okay, WMM supports .WMV, .asf, .AVI, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpv2, and .wm codecs and you can find that VOB, AVI , MP4 are not in the list. We searched the VOB/AVI/MP4 and Windows Movie Makeron Google, and found the other users are also facing the importing problems.
Fortunately, there is an easy way to fix the issue. The easy workaround is to change VOB/AVI/MP4 to Windows Movie Maker acceptable file format like WMV before importing. Actually, it’s not as difficult as you imagine. What you need is a just a common video converter like Brorsoft Video Converter. FAQs: Q1:Why wont iMovie won't import my MP4 files? "Every time I attempt to import an MP4 video/audio file from my Sony EX3, iMovie 11 (and all other Adobe products) tells me it's "unsupported or damaged". I know it's not damaged because it plays through VLC and BS player. Strangely enough it won't play through Quicktime though. why? "
iMovie prefer MPEG-4 and H.264 codecs instead of others while MP4 can contain various video codecs. So if your MP4 videos are not accepted by iMovie, it's probably because of the video codec incompatibility.
Q2:AVI File in iMovie 09 Only Plays Audio? "I'm having this problem that every time I import an .avi file in to iMovie 09, there's no video just the audio. I deleted the preferences and the only way I was able to see the video was when I changed the file extension to .mov. Is there a way that I can see the .avi in iMovie without having to change the extension on the files?"
iMovie only reads AVI that both the audio and the video were compressed by using a codec that iMovie can recognize. If your AVI video files are not imported, it's because of the codec used to create the AVI file is not supported by iMovie, even if you have Perian installed, which only allows you to play AVI in QuickTime.
Q3:How to edit mkv files in iMovie ? "I've some videos in mkv extension and I'd like to edit some scene in iMovie. Is it possible? How to?"
Well, MKV (Matroska Video), as an open and free container format is not so compatible with NLEs including iMovie, though it is able to keep diverse video, audio, and subtitle components in just one file and has ability to let users enjoy high definition videos at home easily.
Okay, since Apple InterMediate Codec(AIC) is the the most compatible codec introduced by Apple which ensures maximum editing quality and efficiency when working with iMovie, the easy option to edit AVI/MKV/MP4 in iMovie would be converting the AVI/MKV/MP4 files to AIC encoded MOV.
